The Magic Fountain of Montjuic
The Magic Fountain or Font Màgica was built for the 1929 International Exposition, the World’s fair that took place in the Montjuic mountain. This fountain was designed by Carles Buigas to replace the emblematic Josep Puig i Cadafalch’s Four Columns.
The Magic Fountain of Montjuic and its amazing shows were an absolute success, but the Spanish Civil War and the post-war period had a huge impact in Barcelona. The fountain was seriously damaged and nearly abandoned during the 1940s and early 1950s.
Carles Buigas himself understook restoration works in 1954 and 1955, but the Magic Fountain wasn’t completely restored until the 1992 Summer Olympics, when it became an icon from Barcelona once again.
Betweeen 1994 and 1998, the Magic Fountain of Montjuic was fully renovated so to be able to show choreographies based on water, lights and music all year. Since then, the fountain is a key piece in every special event that takes place near plaça Espanya, such as La Merce festivities or the New Year celebration.
